Eze: We’ve come a long way, but now it’s time to focus on the Super Cup

Jamshedpur, April 18:

After a rollercoaster Indian Super League campaign that saw Jamshedpur FC defy expectations and push into the playoffs, defender and team leader Stephen Eze believes the focus must now shift to the upcoming Kalinga Super Cup, where the team hopes to build on their momentum.

Reflecting on a season filled with ups and downs, Eze commended the team’s resilience and unity. “First of all, I wouldn’t take credit alone,” he said. “Everything I’ve done this season comes from hard work and, most importantly, the collective effort of the entire team. Our journey in the ISL has been inspiring. No one gave us a chance, but we came together, stayed united, and pushed beyond expectations.”

Jamshedpur FC's late surge into the playoffs captured the imagination of fans, especially after a stunning 2-1 win over Mohun Bagan SG in the first leg of the semi-finals. Unfortunately, Eze had to miss the decisive second leg due to suspension, a moment he described as “heartbreaking.”

“I desperately wanted to be on the pitch in Kolkata, but had to support from afar. The boys gave it everything, and although the result didn’t go our way, that’s football. Sometimes you give your best and things still don’t fall into place. But I’m proud of the fight we showed.”

Despite falling short in the semi-final, the Nigerian international is proud of what the team achieved this season. “I think we surprised many people, and that’s the beauty of football. In the playoffs, we were united, focused, and played with belief. We worked hard for each other, and that spirit carried us through.”

With the ISL season now behind them, Eze made it clear that the team’s attention is firmly on the Kalinga Super Cup. “Our focus now shifts to the Super Cup. We know it will be another tough challenge, but we’ll stay united and ready to face whatever comes our way. The goal is to keep that same hunger, support each other, and aim to go as far as possible.”

Having played in leagues across the world, Eze also shared what makes the Jamshedpur FC group special. “Everyone here is hardworking, respectful, and hungry to improve. No egos, just a team full of fighters. A lot of people wrote us off this season, but through dedication and belief, we showed what we’re made of. I’m proud to be part of this team and we’re not done yet.”

Jamshedpur FC will face Hyderabad FC in their Round of 16 fixture of the Kalinga Super Cup on April 24. Unlike the league format, the Super Cup is a straight knockout tournament, where each match is do-or-die. With training already underway, the team is gearing up for the challenge ahead and Eze is ready to lead from the front once again.
