Sergio Castel – Our Knight in Spanish Armour

The Furnace erupted in joy when Piti found Castel on the counter in the final stages of our Indian Super League opener against Odisha FC last night.
We lost a player, Bikash Jairu, to a red card in the first half, but the boys still managed to secure all three points at our first home fixture of the season. The team was deservingly rewarded for their resilience in the 85th minute when Piti picked out Sergio Castel in an open area on the counter and the striker dinked the ball with tranquility over the Odisha FC goalkeeper, Francisco Dorronsoro, to net what resulted to be the difference between the two sides in the contest.

On scoring the winner on his Jamshedpur FC debut, an elated Castel said, “It feels very good because it was my first match in front of Jamshedpur FC fans. I am happy we got the win, and I am very happy to have helped the team.”

For his 85th minute goal and overall impact in the match, Sergio also picked up the Maruti Suzuki Limitless Player Award.

The JRD Tata Sports Complex witnessed a full-house show last night as Iriondo’s army marched forward with full points at the end of the night. On being asked about the atmosphere at the Furnace last night, Castel expressed, “It was amazing. I want to thank the fans for their support tonight.”

Castel even netted a spot-kick for JFC amidst pre-season friendlies tour when the club faced Neroca FC. Though the Manipur-based club held their ground and put up a fight, Sergio’s penalty was the deciding factor of the match. Sergio Castel kicked-off his footballing journey with Barcelona-based, UE Rubi and Pamplona-based, Osasuna, following which, he played for clubs such as CD Tudelano, CD Lealtad and Las Rozas in Spain itself. Castel ventured abroad for a few years, before finding his way to India to don the colours of Jamshedpur. The Spaniard represented Atletico Madrid's ‘B’ Team before being loaned out to Jamshedpur FC for Hero ISL 2019-20.
The only way hereon is up. The forward has established himself as a crucial member of the squad and will play a vital role in Coach Antonio’s plans for the season ahead. We host newbies Hyderabad FC in our next fixture on the 29th of this month and are confident that Sergio Castel will turn out to be a valuable asset for the club.
