A fascinating duel for the 3rd position – Chennaiyin FC vs Jamshedpur FC

This was a match in which both the sides were aware of the consequences of defeat, and that factor set the tone for how this fascinating contest played out on Sunday evening.

Chennaiyin FC began the game by making a run at goal, which earned them a free-kick from just outside the box. The attempt by Jaime Gavilan  went wide of the near post and out for goal-kick.

Chennaiyin FC seemed to be satisfied creating chances from the back, building their play patiently, while Jamshedpur FC kept the pressure up and looked to burst forward with the ball at every opportunity. The first half saw both teams threaten and battle it out in the midfield, while not creating anything of note up front. The first real chance of the match fell to Farukh Chaudhary, whose diving header went just wide from close range.

This miss surely didn’t dampen Jamshedpur FC’s spirits who kept up their intensity. Chennaiyin FC’s failure to properly clear a free kick cost them dearly, as the ball fell to a waiting Wellington Priori outside the box. Making no mistake, the Brazilian midfielder unleashed a powerful volley to score a memorable goal. It was only fitting that a goal of extreme quality was the 200th goal scored during the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2017-18.

It took Chennaiyin FC a short while to recover. They crafted a chance that fell to Bikramjit Singh who attempted to turn and strike, but failed to hit the target. The first half concluded with Jamshedpur FC on top and looking the better of the two sides.

Jamshedpur FC kicked off the second half and were full of intensity, crafting a chance for Farukh shortly after. The visitors were assured in defence and were breaking with pace, which left Chennaiyin FC with the formidable task of taking down a team high on morale.

The Marina Machans were a lot more eager in offense in the second half and were trying to create chances down the flanks. Gavilan crafted a great chance for Raphael Augusto after a run down the flanks who drilled a shot just wide of the post.

The teams seemed to settle down into their tactics as time went on, with Jamshedpur FC looking confident at the back and in possession, while Chennaiyin FC were compact and took their chances. With the clock running down, it seemed like the Jamshedpur FC were about to make this their 4th consecutive win.

However, Rene Mehelic of Chennaiyin FC sent in a ball from the corner which found Mohammed Rafi. His looping header brought the scores level in the 89th minute, thus ensuring Chennaiyin FC held on to their 3rd position.
