Shillong, March 29: Jamshedpur FC faces a decisive clash against NorthEast United FC in the Indian Super League playoff at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on March 30 at 7:30 PM. With a place in the semi-finals at stake, the Men of Steel are prepared for a battle against a side that has already bested them twice this season. However, head coach Khalid Jamil and his squad are determined to turn the tide when it matters most.
Jamshedpur FC enters the playoffs after a mixed league campaign, finishing fifth on the table. While the team suffered back-to-back losses at the end of the regular season, the break before the playoffs has provided them with much-needed time to regroup and recover.
"The break was very important for us. It helped the players recover both physically and mentally. Some players needed rest, while those carrying injuries have used this time to bounce back," said Khalid Jamil. "This is a completely different game from the league phase. We must approach it with a positive mindset, as there is no second chance. We have worked hard in training, and now it’s time to show our best on the pitch."
However, Jamshedpur faces a tough opponent in NorthEast United, who finished fourth in the league standings with 38 points. The Highlanders are on a four-match unbeaten run against Jamshedpur (W3 D1) and have kept back-to-back clean sheets in the league. Meanwhile, Jamshedpur has struggled defensively, conceding three or more goals in each of their last two games. Injury concerns also add to their challenge, with key defenders Pratik Chaudhari and Lazar Ćirković ruled out for this crucial fixture.
NorthEast United’s attacking efficiency has been one of their biggest strengths this season. Moroccan forward Alaaeddine Ajaraie has been particularly lethal, scoring four goals in just two matches against Jamshedpur.
But Khalid Jamil remains undeterred. "Either you win, or you have to go back. We must take responsibility and work hard. We have analyzed our past performances, worked on our weaknesses, and are fully prepared to turn things around," he said.
Stephen Eze, one of Jamshedpur’s key defenders, knows that shutting down NorthEast’s attack will be crucial. "We know NorthEast is a tough opponent, but our focus is on staying compact and disciplined. It’s about being aggressive, composed, and taking our chances when they come," he stated.
While the Highlanders may have the upper hand in recent meetings, Jamshedpur is drawing inspiration from its passionate supporters. "Jamshedpur has some of the best fans in India. We know we’re not at home, but we request them to support us in this game. Their backing will be vital," Jamil added.
For young midfielder Nikhil Barla, who is set for his first ISL playoff appearance, the match is an opportunity to prove himself. "We will go all out tomorrow. There are no second chances in this match. We are ready to fight for every ball, every tackle, and every goal," he stated.
Jamshedpur FC holds a slight edge in the overall head-to-head record, with six wins to NorthEast’s four, while six encounters have ended in draws. But in a one-off knockout match, past results matter little. The Men of Steel know what is at stake and are ready to prove themselves on the big stage.
The match will be live on JioCinema and Star Sports 3 from 7:30 PM onwards.
