The Not So Secret Tale of Tattoos ft. Jordan Murray

Born and raised in the city of Wollongong, Australia, to Peter and Karen, Jordan David Murray has always had a soft corner for the beautiful game since he was a kid. A proud owner of the yellow Australian football jersey,  Jordan once talked about the significance of that very jersey. “That jersey actually belongs to my dad as he played football as well. I am lucky enough that football runs in my family. But yes, that is my dad’s jersey from when he was playing in the Australian leagues back in the day around 20-30 years ago.”

But that’s not the only cool thing that the Viper proudly owns.

Every fan of Jordan Murray right from Manjappada to the Red Miners, they have all been a witness to the many tattoos that our striker has ever donned (since the age of 21), and each and every artwork carved, comes with a significant meaning that is close to Jordan’s heart. Today, we deep dive into the whens and whys in this exclusive conversation with the striker as he opens up about his adventures with the piece of art drawn on his body.

What was the first thought behind getting a tattoo?

I’ve always loved tattoos, especially the ones with a special meaning behind them. My first tattoo is a quote that I love. It has a very simple meaning - never give up no matter the chances of success. Fight till the end. The meaning stayed with me and that’s why I chose to start with that one.

Talk a little about the significance of each tattoo with us

  1. I have “Peter & Karen” written on both wrists. Those are the names of my parents.
  2. The one on my right hand says “Once more into the fray, into the last good fight I’ll ever know. Live and die on this day” - my first ever tattoo and it’s a quote that I absolutely love.
  3. The one under my navel is my year of birth - 1995
  4. The one on the sides of my stomach are Swallows (type of birds)
  5. The one on my chest is a Cross because I’m catholic.
  6. The one right below my neck says “Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat.” It means that fortune favours the brave.
  7. The one on my calf muscle is a picture of my father and I. It’s my favourite to be honest as I have always wanted to follow my Dad’s footsteps and become a professional footballer just like him; the tattoo artist did a fantastic job with it.
  8. The one I sport on my back is a poem that I absolutely adore called “Invictus”. It means “unconquerable” or “undefeated” in Latin. This poem is about showing courage in the face of death, and holding on to one's own dignity despite the indignities life places before us.

Do you plan on getting more tattoos?

I do to be very honest but I don’t want my body covered. I’ll see when I can get a couple more drawn.

Out of all of them, which one is your newest favourite

The “father and son” is my newest, favourite.

Talk about the reactions of your friends and family when they saw your tattoo.

Actually my family loves all of them (or at least I’m pretty sure anyway 🤪). They do know that everything that I get drawn, has a meaning to it which they love in particular.

Can you share the name of the tattoo artist?

My tattoo artist for the majority of the tattoos is @sloan_purple on Instagram! Check her out😜.
