In My Own Words: Amarjit Singh Kiyam

Young gun Amarjit Singh Kiyam has seen and faced many hardships as a footballer. His story is of sheer grit, determination and hard work and today, he in his own words talks about his journey as a footballer.

“What I am about to tell you, I haven't told this to anyone before, so what I'll be sharing now is deeply personal and it was a little tough to talk about the journey, but here I am.

After the U17 World Cup, I received a lot of offers. The group of players from that squad became the most sought after ahead of the 2018-19 season. Of course I was ecstatic about all of the attention. It was a great feeling. But I was also young and anxious, worried and constantly wondering which club, which league should I be a part of, ISL or I-League as both were going on simultaneously. Whatever I choose, will decide my fate, whoever gives me more game time is what will change everything for me. And for me during that period, game time was a priority. I didn't want to play just for the money, it was about gaining experience, learning and growing as a player. So I discussed with my seniors, my family and decided to be a part of the Indian Arrows as the I League too comes with quality competitive matches. Teams as big as Mohun Bagan are a part of it so for me to play against a club like that was a great learning curve. Money, fame can be earned whenever I want, but gaining the right kind of experience is rare and so I followed that.

Finally my dream came true when I received my opportunity to play in the ISL. It was tough to choose as whatever club I would go for would be a make it or break it situation for me. So, I spoke to a lot of my seniors, took their advice and decided to go for Jamshedpur FC.

This club gave me that opportunity and I am thankful that they signed me, believed in me and gave me a chance to prove my worth. Jamshedpur FC is a club with everything that a young player needs to grow as footballer - from having their training ground, to gym and pool facilities, stay, to having its own home ground, I knew I made the right call. I believed and planned to give my 110% to the team, to the fans, to bring the trophy for them. Then when a camp was going on in Goa, that's where things took a turn for me. I got injured, I missed the qualifier round. I thought the team may not give me a call because of my injury, I imagined the worst possible scenarios in my head.

The opposite happened.

I got a call for the pre-season from the club, and I was well taken care of. From medical treatments, to doctors, physios, the team made sure to help me recover as comfortably and quickly as possible. They encouraged me to come, talk with the senior players, interact with them, get to know them, learn from them. Not only did it help me physically, but it motivated my mentally as well and I guess, I can call myself absolutely lucky that way that I was given this crucial chance. And I am absolutely happy and grateful to be a part of this amazing club.

I want to thank everyone working behind the scenes, from the medical staff to the hospitality staff to the management team for constantly treating each one of us like family, sharing everything, laughing with us when we need it, being serious with us when we need it, constantly collaborating with each other and that is one of the many things I love about Jamshedpur FC.

This season wasn't our greatest, but we will do everything to turn things around, I will do everything to turn things around, and work towards bringing the trophy home. I am ready to give my 100% to the team, to the fans and I want to keep contributing to Jamshedpur FC in the future as well.”
