Jamshedpur, July 17: As the Durand Cup returns to the Furnace, Jamshedpur FC’s seasoned goalkeeper Albino Gomes says the team is determined to embrace the tournament’s storied legacy and deliver a performance that makes the city proud.
With all of JFC’s group matches set to be played at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, anticipation in Jamshedpur is running high. Gomes, who was one of the standout performers last season, is clear about the need to leave the past behind and set new standards.
"Last season was special for us. We fought hard, and the boys really gave everything. But that’s in the past now," Gomes said. "The Durand Cup is a historic tournament with so much legacy, and we know fans in Jamshedpur expect us to respect that with our performances. My role now is to bring even more focus and composure at the back, to help us go as far as we can. We want to set the tone right from the start."
With several new faces and promising young players in the defensive lineup, Gomes acknowledges that understanding each other quickly will be vital.
"It’s always a challenge when you have new players, but that’s part of football. Our job is to make them feel confident and make sure we’re all on the same page tactically. We’ll follow the coach’s plans closely. I want to ensure we’re solid at the back and communicating all the time."
Training has been intense since the squad gathered in the city, with Coach Khalid Jamil making the most of the short preparation window. Gomes stressed that the mood in the camp has been focused and positive, with everyone clear on the challenge ahead.
"We know what’s at stake. This preparation phase is crucial because the Durand Cup isn’t just another tournament, it’s the oldest in India, with so much respect attached to it. Personally, I’m pushing myself in every session to make sure I’m ready to deliver for Jamshedpur. We want to get through the group and show our city we mean business."
Jamshedpur FC’s group stage includes matches against disciplined opponents like Tribhuvan Army FT and Indian Army FT, known for their physical and organised style. Gomes says the team will show full respect for their qualities.
"We expect them to be very disciplined, physical, and well-drilled. Army teams never give up easily, and they’ll push us for 90 minutes. We have to respect that and be prepared. It’s why training has to be sharp. The Durand Cup has always thrown up tough matches like these. it’s a tournament that tests your character. We’re ready for that fight."
As the city gears up for big nights under the lights at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, Gomes, the custodian is banking on home support.
"I just want to tell all our incredible fans, please come and support us in big numbers. We truly need you. Your energy drives us on the pitch. We know the history of this tournament and what it would mean to bring the Durand Cup to Jamshedpur. Let’s make the Furnace the most intimidating place for any opponent. Together, we can do something special."
The Durand Cup will see Jamshedpur FC play all their group stage matches at home, with the first game scheduled for 24 July against Tribhuvan Army FT, then Indian Army FT on 29 July, and 1Ladakh FC on 8 August.
