Jamshedpur, February 20: Buoyed by a resilient 1-0 victory over Mohammedan SC in their season opener, Jamshedpur FC are set for their next battle against Punjab FC in the Indian Super League at the JRD Tata Sports Complex on February 21 at 7.30 PM.
The Men of Steel began their campaign on a positive note, with Madih Salal’s deflected strike sealing three valuable points. Yet, despite the win, head coach Owen Coyle was quick to underline the need for sharper finishing. “We created some good goalscoring opportunities that should have resulted in more goals. We must be more clinical and take a better percentage of our chances,” Coyle said ahead of Saturday’s clash.
Punjab FC, meanwhile, will kick off their season after their opening fixture was postponed, making them a fresh and potentially dangerous opponent. Coyle is aware of the challenge. “Punjab are a very good side. They have signed some very good players and have terrific young Indian talents. They have pace and are dangerous in attack. We respect them a lot, but if we perform to our maximum, it is a game we can win,” he added.
With a near sell-out crowd expected at the Furnace, Jamshedpur will look to ride the energy of their home support in what promises to be an intense encounter.
At the back, much will depend on the composure and leadership of skipper Steven Eze. The centre-back led from the front in the opener, guiding the team to a clean sheet with a disciplined defensive display. “We don’t dwell on mistakes. We push each other and give 100 percent from the first minute. With the fans behind us, we fight for every ball,” Eze said.
The head-to-head record offers further encouragement. Last season, Jamshedpur FC completed a double over Punjab FC with two 2-1 victories, results that significantly boosted their playoff ambitions. However, Punjab have reshaped their squad this year, bringing in fresh faces and adding depth. Former JFC left-back Mohammed Uvais now lines up for Punjab, adding an intriguing subplot to the contest.
Fans can download tickets exclusively via the District by Zomato app, with entry through digital only tickets. The match will be streamed live on the FanCode app and telecast on the Sony Sports Network.
With momentum on their side and the Furnace ready to roar, Jamshedpur FC will be determined to turn belief into another three points on home turf.
