Peter Hartley: A young boy from Hartlepool became the leader of the Champions of India

An ambitious youngster from the United Kingdom dreamt of becoming a professional footballer. He planned, he practised, he worked hard but who would have thought that a boy from England would grow up to become not only a successful footballer in English football leagues but also become the leader of the Champions of India, Jamshedpur FC?

This is the story of Peter Hartley!

With his eyes filled with fire and a heart full of passion, he began his professional career with Sunderland in 2000, when he signed a youth contract with the club. He proceeded to sign his first ever professional contract in 2006 and made his debut for the team against Leicester City in 2007. After such a big opportunity, he went on to spend some time on loan at Chesterfield FC before joining Hartlepool United in 2009, making this stint the longest in his footballing career; he played there for four years and captained his side for two of those years.

Hartley went on to play for more clubs like Stevenage, Plymouth Argyle, Bristol Rovers, and Blackpool before joining Motherwell FC registering quite a run for the club.

After his contract at Motherwell FC came to an end, the English centre-back decided to put his experience to use in a completely new challenge in his footballing career and decided to become a part of Jamshedpur FC ahead of the 2020-21 Hero ISL season. “Sometimes, a new challenge is what is required and I needed to make sure that I chose a club and a manager who can help me grow and improve as a person and player and Jamshedpur F.C. is the place for that I believe,” said the skipper in his first interview with the club. Along with being one of the major additions to the Jamshedpur side, Peter Hartley was also announced as the captain of the squad who would lead the team to levels of greatness that it had never managed to achieve since its inception. “He brings in so much experience from playing in the English leagues and the Scottish Premiership. He is a central defender with great capability and a born leader. He is a fighter who is mentally strong and a fierce competitor. Hartley hates conceding goals and that's the attitude I need from my center-back", said Owen Coyle in the press release ahead of the 2020-21 season of Hero ISL.

Needless to say, the English defender has been living up to the former head coach and fans’ expectations ever since with his robust leadership skills, wall-like defensive skills and a heart-warming smile.

Peter became an instant impact for Jamshedpur FC when he began his debut campaign for the Men of Steel as he displayed his confident approach on the pitch, leadership to lead the team forward in ups and downs and held the backline together with his commanding presence in the defensive line-up in every appearance in the Jamshedpur kit. Peter Hartley also rose to the occasion when the team needed with his 2 goals in 19 games along with some impressive defensive numbers on the back end of the pitch.

The English defender was also accompanied by the ‘Super Eagle’ Stephen Eze in the centre-back position as the two experienced foreign defenders turned out to be one of the best defensive duos in the league, registering 9 clean sheets out of the 20 games. Peter Hartley and his Men of Steel narrowly missed out on qualifying for the club’s first ever playoffs but surely made a strong statement with his performance and a long-lasting impact on the Red Miners.

After, the skipper was one of the players who was retained for another season as the club added a bunch of more foreign additions to their side to make the team even more ferocious for the 2021-22 season of the Hero ISL.  “We were mean in defence the previous season, and a lot of it was down to how the skipper organised things at the back for us. Like I said when we signed Peter, he is a big player for us who hates conceding goals. He brings with him so much experience from the English and Scottish Leagues, something that rubbed on to everyone around him," said the former Jamshedpur FC Head Coach, Owen Coyle when asked on his thoughts on retaining Peter for another season.

With the Brazilian giant, Eli Sabia by his side in the defence, Peter Hartley continued to put forth defensive masterpieces in almost every fixture he featured in and also came through to score 3 goals for his side which also saved the team from losing points as well as securing wins. The skipper steered the Jamshedpur ship through rough waters and weathered every storm that came in their path to take the team to the success island that the club and its fans have been yearning for since the club’s inception.

After giving their everything on the pitch in every minute, the dream of a young kid from Hartlepool finally came true when he successfully guided his team to glory and lifted the coveted Hero ISL League Shield along with the Men of Steel by his side as the club earned their first ever silverware.

The Jamshedpur squad put a close to their 2021-22 campaign of the Hero ISL at the very top of the league table with a record breaking 43 points and 7 back-to-back wins in a row setting a league record. Peter Hartley also clocked in his 450th career club appearance and became the only player in the league to win 7 consecutive games. Peter’s towering and commanding presence at the back along with his set-piece contributions in the front end of the pitch made him a complete unit on the pitch for Jamshedpur FC making him one of the influential aspects of the success that the squad achieved and also helped him have a record breaking season.

Proudly repping the red and blue colours and the Jamshedpur crest on his chest, the captain of Jamshedpur FC, Peter Hartley, is only ageing like a fine wine and shows no sign of stopping as he is hungry to achieve even greater heights in his footballing career. The ambitious centre-back from Hartlepool is always up for a challenge to keep pushing his limits to the max and lead his side to the top through thick and thin and we personally cannot wait to see what’s next in store for our Cap.
